Thames Emergency Department

Client: Waikato District Health Board
Timeframe: Completed March 2009
Total value: $8M

Project description:

The project involved demolition of existing heritage timber buildings including consultation with local iwi who had an interest in retaining the timber in the Thames region.

Prior to demolition, asbestos contaminated soil in the basement cavity was removed. The construction of a new emergency department followed which the design incorporated future proofing to allow an upper floor and a theatre block to be added subject to future funding.

The completion of the project provided a modern facility including a new ambulance bay to serve the Thames Coromandel region which during summer can result in high local demands on the healthcare services due to seasonal increased population.
