Skycity H5/H6 Hotel Project, Auckland, New Zealand

Client: SKYCITY
Timeframe: 2011
Total value: $30m

Components: VIP accommodation, gaming suites and restaurant

Project description:

In a major focus on the Asian gaming market, and to capitalise on the opportunity presented by the 2011 Rugby World Cup, SKYCITY Auckland decided to upgrade and extend their hotel facilities. To provide new VIP gaming suites, rooms and a restaurant, level 5 of the hotel was extended and an extra floor (level 6) was added.

Our role

Employees of Xigo were contracted to provide advice to SKYCITY’s team and engineer to the contract.

Main challenges

  • Managing the project within a very tight timeframe – it had to be complete in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup
  • Securing suitable labour and resources during a heated pre-RWC construction market
  • Procuring high quality materials from overseas, to appeal to the high-end Asian market
  • Design change management, to ensure changes wouldn’t impact on delivery date
  • Ensuring the end product would meet the needs of Asian high-rollers, right down to good feng shui and suites decorated in red and gold

Our approach

Xigo’s proactive management style kept all parties informed of key risks and reinforced the need to make timely decisions, to enable the project to be delivered within the required timeframe.

Outcome

The project was completed on time and met all of SKYCITY’s expectations. With fabulous views over the Auckland Harbour, the new VIP suites and gaming salons are successfully competing with top casino locations around the world, including Singapore, Macau and Sydney.
