Project description:

A new 8 metre span concrete bridge to replace an old timber bridge built in 1909 across Forest Lakes Road, Kapiti. Construction took place around the operational main trunk rail line. A 43 hour window to demolish the old bridge and install the new span when train services were not running was made available for 27-29 December 2015. Part of the project works were carried out on behalf of Kapiti Coast District Council and required lowering of the road under the new bridge.

  • Liaison with Design consultant and KiwiRail stakeholders to achieve design sign off.
  • Manage formation of KiwiRail and Council cost share agreement
  • Support KiwiRail’s RMA Adviser through the Outline Plan of Works process.
  • Preparation of tender/contract documents
  • Management of the main contractor procurement process
  • Administered the construction contract including Engineer to Contract
  • Support KiwiRail’s community liaison officer’s efforts in providing project information to local residents

Main challenges

  • Construction within an operational rail corridor
  • Maintaining access for local residents along the road
  • Coordination between key stakeholders KiwiRail and Council
  • Meeting tight time frames for enabling works and construction during the planned shutdown to ensure there was no unplanned disruption to rail services and therefore KiwiRail clients
