Project description:

A new, $12m sports and community facility in Taita, Lower Hutt.   Opened in October 2015, this is the first, fully integrated, recreation and community based facility in Wellington. It opened with a rousing rendition of the New Zealand folk song, ‘He Honore’, sung by 750 local school students. Well known locals, including former Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu and Mayor Ray Wallace, also attended the opening of the new Walter Nash Centre.

At the opening ceremony, Community Facilities Trust Chair Alister Skene said, “This is a centre that gives the Taita Community a true heart, and provides a sports facility the whole Hutt Community will be proud of.”

The new Walter Nash Centre links to the existing centre and includes the addition of a three court indoor sports hall, a new library and community centre, a gymnasium, café and one external netball court. The development also included a fire protection upgrade to the existing Walter Nash Building.
